Volunteering with Lincoln Lion's Den
Volunteers do a variety of activities in our program. The majority of our
volunteers arrive at 3:00pm while the students are at break and interact
with and supervise the kids out on the playground until 3:15pm when the bell
rings and students line up to go inside. Then they work individually with
students on reading or homework activities. From 4:00-5:00pm, volunteers
assist the classroom teachers with a variety of "clubs" or organized group
activities. There are also opportunities to instruct your own club in your
area of expertise. Volunteers are very much appreciated because they provide
students with individualized attention (which they love and crave!).
Volunteer Requirements
Reliability is very important to this program. It really helps the students to
see the regular commitment of volunteers, and it helps them feel valued.
If you are a student at OSU and need volunteer hours for a class requirement,
we ask that you commit to volunteering regularly throughout the term, even if
you complete your required number of hours before the term ends. Most students
volunteer about once a week, from 3:00-5:00pm. This usually means that they get
20 hours, or 2 hours a week for 10 weeks. However, you can always volunteer
more often!
Here is a link to
Corvallis 509J School District Calendar
to help you plan when
you will volunteer. We have the Lion's Den program only on full elementary school
days (we do not have the program on holidays, teacher prep days, or on early
release days.
